Course Overview

This course is specifically designed for TSLI's, TSLT's, RSLI's, RSLT's and Deaf Performers.

Step into a fully practical lab where you’ll test, film, and refine your performance skills in a supportive, reflective environment. This one-day intensive is highly practical, creative, and reflective — designed for interpreters who want to move beyond theory and actively develop their performance skills through practice, reflection, and peer learning.

Rather than focusing on the “correct” way to translate, the day centres on:

• Visual storytelling
• Layering meaning
• Economy of language
• Audience awareness
• Self-reflection and development

This is an immersive, in-person Song Club experience — an expansion of our popular free online Song Club sessions. It isn’t about being taught the “right” way to interpret a song; it’s about doing the work — experimenting, reflecting, and developing your own performance style in a supportive, collaborative space. You’ll leave with filmed material, structured feedback, and a personalised development plan.

What the Course Will Cover

Throughout the day, you’ll be on your feet:

• Working with song material and testing out ideas
• Filming your own interpreting and reviewing it in a supportive environment
• Developing reflection skills to identify your strengths and areas for growth
• Exploring layering in performance (emotion, perspective, narrative)
• Applying “show, don’t tell” techniques to enhance visual communication
• Using economy of language to prioritise meaning over word-for-word translation
• Adapting your performance for different audiences and contexts
• Experimenting with genre and style in a low-risk, creative space
• Building confidence in performing, sharing, and receiving feedback

Facilitator Bio:

Sammie Vanterpool, a BSL interpreter with over 20 years’ experience, is committed to developing interpreters and advancing the profession through mentoring and reflective practice. Alongside her, Karen Ward-Welch specialises in performance and professional supervision. Together, they empower interpreters to evaluate practice, strengthen performance, and build confidence across diverse settings.

Course Completion Info

Joining instructions will be sent one week before the course start date.
This course is delivered in spoken English. If the cohort includes Deaf participants, it will be delivered in BSL to ensure the session is fully accessible to everyone.
Course approved by NRCPD with 6 Structured CPD points being awarded to attendees – a certificate will be provided upon completion.

You'll receive automatic reminder emails 45 and 35 days before the course with payment details for your remaining balance.
The remaining payment must be completed no later than 30 days before the course start date to fully secure your place.

Your booking is confirmed once full payment has been received.

Please note that all deposits and full payments are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend a course, you may transfer your place to a suitable replacement. A refund will only be issued once a replacement participant has been confirmed.

Course Confirmation & Minimum Numbers

Each course requires a minimum number of participants to run.
If the course has not reached sufficient capacity by 70 days before the start date, it may be cancelled in accordance with venue terms.
In this case, all deposits and payments will be refunded in full or rescheduled to the next available date.
